Health Literacy

Health Literacy
Health literacy is the ability to understand health information and to use that information to make good decisions about your health and medical care. Research indicates that 9 out of 10 people have difficulty using available health information.
As a result, in 2010, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, created the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy.  To align with this plan, The NEEDs Center, using evidence-based health literacy principles and practices, offers consultative services to:
  • Evaluate reading level, comprehension, usefulness and acceptability of health, nutrition education materials and recipes
  • Develop clear, accurate client-based health and nutrition education messages, materials and recipes in English and Spanish.
